Today I learned some not so great news for those of us who make custom clothing and accessories for children and for retailers who sell children's clothing, toys and other products for ages 12 and under. It's hush hush right now due to the Christmas selling season but come February 9, 2009 we will not be able to sell goods without proof of lead testing and this includes anyone who sells pre-owned items for kids on Ebay as well. We can also expect up to a 50% increase in these products from retailers due to the cost of these tests. As most of you know I am a power seller on ebay and run my ebay store Carousel Collections. It has been about a year and a half since I started my ebay business where I resell pre-owned children's clothes along with new items as well. A lot of hard work has been put into my business and I am outraged at this new development. Anyone who sells products that have no proof of lead testing will be punishable by law, which is a risk I do not wish to take. This evening I have started a mass collection of my inventory and plan on returning anything I have bought that is still new with tags. For those items that are pre-owned or cannot be returned I plan on reselling on ebay in January. I will be selling Fall/winter/spring & summer Gap and Gymboree clothing items to purge my inventory while I still can legally. Fiana's outgrown toys I was supposed to sell this month will be pushed back to January as well due to the business of the holiday season. After Feb 9 2009 comes I have no clue what to do when it comes to buying clothes for my daughter. Like many other mothers, I buy for Fiana and recylce her clothes by reselling them on ebay. I am still trying to figure out if it is worth the hassle of reselling her clothes or to keep my business in operation. Fiana's closet is looking more and more bare since I started my inventory and it breaks my heart that I will be returning so many cute outfits in the upcoming days.
Here are some links of pages that I am following that address this issue in more detail. The Cpsia Blog has links to youtube videos and petitions. Please notify your congressmen by filling out this form as well and pray this law is overturned!
